THE ISLAND OF SYROS
Hermoupolis, the capital city of the island as well as of Cyclades, is characteristically called ‘’ the lady ‘’ withits big port, its impressive public and privately owned neoclassical buildings and its squares. Some of its massive buildings are the impressive Town Council, designed by Tsiller, the Apollo theatre, which is the miniature of La Scala de Milano, and other mansions which justify the glorious history of the town.
Very important is also the medieval settlement of Ano Syros, the home land of Markos Vamvakaris, with the old occidental castle, the narrow picturesque alleys and the Cathedral of the Catholics, St. George.
The beautiful village of Possidonia, which is situated 12 kilometers off Hermoupolis, has a big number of mansions and villas owned by highly acclaimed and wealthy families that lived there in the past, such as the families of Tsiropinas, Ladopoulos, Georgiadis, Koulouris, Krinos, Diakakis and others.
Agathopes, near which ‘’ Akrogiali rooms ‘’ are situated, is an enchanting sandy beach with crystal waters, which deepen gradually and make it ideal for children. It is easily accessible and the most cosmopolitan beach on the island.
